Nurses share the reasons why they got into nursing

Some nurses have kindly shared with us why they chose to step into the world of nursing. We hope you find them as inspirational as we found them!

Nurses share the reasons they chose a life of nursing!

Everyone has a reason why they got into nursing.

For some, it could have derived from pretending to be a nurse when they were young.

For others, it could be a life experience that led them down the path to nursing.

In this blog, real nurses share their real reasons why they got into nursing.

For some, caring for others is a natural instinct...

“I love helping people, I can’t sit still when I know someone needs help. Even if I can’t help them directly with their problem, I try to find help for them. That’s when my parents told me I will be a great nurse. And true, I’ve been a nurse for twenty-five years now!”

- @sannahbernadette on Instagram.

“I became a nurse as I love caring for people. I knew from a very young age what route to take as remembered drawing pictures of children with disabilities. Now I’m a RNLD and used to work with kids but now elderly and I love it. Don’t know anything else as all I’ve done is care for people.”

For others, they wanted to give back...

“I have lupus, and while I was hospitalised, I had some amazing nurses. They prayed for me, cried with me and made me laugh. I was hospitalised for 2 months and every procedure I had they’d pop in my room even if I wasn’t their patient and ask me how I was doing. They showed so much compassion to a stranger, that I knew I had to dedicate my life to doing for others what they did for me.”

- @jocelynkm on Instagram.

“I have two nurse practitioners who regularly care for my health. They are essentially my counsellors, doctors, and role models. I want to challenge myself to become that person for my patient”

- @becks.queen on Instagram.

It could just be a plain and simple reason...

“I was a stay at home mom; I had three kids I wanted to keep in private school. I never sugarcoat it - I became a nurse for the money and the hours. Plain and simple”

Or for the fact that every day is different...

“I am becoming a nurse partly because my mom is a nurse practitioner and tells me how she’s made people’s lives better. I have also pursued it because of the wide variety of fields it offers. I like to keep myself on my toes and nursing has the potential to do that.”

Some worked their way up from different roles...

“I worked as a CNA (certified nursing assistant) for 10+ years in LTC (long-term care). I loved my job but hated when some nurses ignored me when I told them something wasn’t right with a patient and a small issue became a big one, sometimes an almost fatal one. I became a nurse so I could advocate for my patients. I can now take steps that I couldn’t before to ensure my patients safety, health and quality of life”

And some had to suffer a tragic experience to realise that nursing is their calling...

“I was originally a business major who felt completely lost and not what I pictured doing for the rest of my life. In my third year of school, my dad was in a motorcycle accident and spent over a month in hospital. From spending every day there with him to the following months of helping him through extensive rehab, I realised that nursing was my passion and dropped out of business school to pursue nursing. I’ve been a neurosurgery nurse for 2 years now and never looked back.”
