What Does an Advanced Nurse Practitioner Do?

Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs) are highly skilled clinicians working across a variety of settings including hospital wards, GP surgeries, urgent care centres, and community clinics. They are key members of multi-disciplinary teams, collaborating with doctors, pharmacists, and allied health professionals to deliver comprehensive patient care. ANPs assess, diagnose, and manage patients with both acute and chronic conditions—from minor injuries to complex long-term illnesses.

They work across NHS and private sector environments, often acting as autonomous practitioners while still contributing to team-based care.

Key duties include:

  • Conducting clinical assessments and physical examinations
  • Diagnosing and managing illnesses
  • Prescribing medications (where qualified)
  • Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests
  • Supporting patient education and self-management
  • Collaborating within multi-disciplinary teams

My new role is Advanced Nurse Practitioner [in general practice]. Through this role I can autonomously assess, diagnose, treat or admit patients who need to be seen urgently.

How to Become an Advanced Nurse Practitioner

To become an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in the UK, you must first qualify as a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). This typically involves completing a nursing degree followed by gaining clinical experience in a relevant field. Most ANPs then undertake a Master’s level qualification in advanced clinical practice, which includes modules in clinical assessment, prescribing, and leadership.

Entry requirements vary but usually include a minimum number of years’ post-registration experience. Some professionals transition into ANP roles through employer-supported training programmes or postgraduate apprenticeships.
