About us
Derwent Care Home is part of Mariposa Care Group. We are a 45 bed care home in Low Westwood, approximately 25 minutes from both Durham and Newcastle. We offer accommodation for older people who require personal care, and our home includes care for those with dementia.
Derwent Care Home received a ‘Good’ rating by the CQC for all of its services and the accompanying report summarised the staff very positively: “People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives, and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible.
The home provides specialist dementia care, old age care, sensory impairment support and residential care, with services tailored to each individual. Services are set across three floors, and the modern building offers a bright, clean and spacious environment for residents and staff.
The home includes a cafe, dining rooms, cinema room, hair and nail salon and ‘dementia friendly shop’.
The home has been newly refurbished in May 2024 to include carefully designed additional spaces (the Cafe, Orangery and Shop) to ensure these environments meet the needs of those living with dementia, and ensure they can continue to lead their best lives.

- Excellent face to face training from experienced care professionals and access to video based e-learning.
- Training programmes and qualifications, funded by us, to make sure you feel confident in your role and can develop.
- Annual pay reviews recognising your contribution to making our homes a great place to live and work.
- An organisation with an impressive internal promotion record, investing in your future and creating opportunities for people. We have many departments/teams, so you can learn from working in lots of different areas of the business.
- Free tea, coffee, and fresh fruit.
- Private health care options help reduce the cost of essential bills, such as dentists and opticians.
Career development
There is a dedicated and highly supportive workforce at Derwent, with all team members equally playing a valuable role in ensuring our residents are happy, well-cared for and feel at home during their time with us.
We believe in the importance of investing in training and qualifications, including apprenticeships, to ensure that everyone can achieve their potential and career objectives. As a result, we have a proud track record of internal promotion and progression.
Many of the Care Practitioners with us have previously worked in the NHS or for other healthcare employers. We welcome those with significant clinical experience who may be wishing to transfer to a care home setting for improved flexibility and advanced career opportunities.
Our non-senior care roles are open to anyone willing to undertake training, who share the same workplace values as us and are committed to striving towards outstanding care at all times. In return, we offer a tailored programme of support and career pathways that lead towards senior and clinical support roles.
Some of our Care Practitioners choose to work alongside studying and with bank roles also available at the home, it is a good opportunity to gain valuable healthcare experience in a supportive and welcoming environment.
Practical information about working here
Derwent Care Home’s location means it enjoys beautiful views over the Derwent river and valley. Low Westwood is a village in County Durham, North East England, situated near the River Derwent. It has a rural setting but benefits from being close to larger towns like Consett and Newcastle, which offer more amenities.
Local facilities include small shops for essentials, though larger shopping centres, including the local Metro Centre, are a short drive away. The village has a post office, hairdressers, an Italian restaurant and community centre. The home works closely, also, with the local church. Entertainment options are limited within the village itself, but nearby towns have cinemas, restaurants, and sports facilities.
Schools are available in surrounding areas, with primary and secondary schools accessible by short commutes. For travel, the village is connected by local bus services and has road links to the A68 and A692, providing access to larger cities. The nearest train stations are in Newcastle and Durham, about 20-30 minutes' drive away. Derwent House also offers on-site parking for staff.
