Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The 22-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.

Acting as an agent for change, you will establish systems and processes; as you review them you will challenge appropriately and confidently, promoting good governance and a culture of continuous quality improvement.

Maintaining a safe and clean environment you will make sure risk management arrangements are in place.

Contributing to budget management and admission/discharge planning you will facilitate CPD, develop succession plans and focus on training, mentoring and upskilling. You will lead appraisal/development review, orientation and induction programmes ensuring supervision and mentorship is embedded plus compliance with statutory and mandatory training requirements.

You must manage duty rotas/annual leave and study leave to ensure adequate nursing cover and appropriate skill mix. You must also provide emergency clinical care in the ambulance and undertake emergency Triage using the Manchester system.

Qualifications

Holding an Adult Nursing Diploma or Degree and substantial post-registration experience within an Acute General Hospital setting within the last 6 years you are a Registered Nurse on Part 1 of the live NMC Register or an equivalent Nursing Body. Experience

You have sound knowledge of changing trends and contemporary developments within health care with a background in A&E or ICU/HDU or AMU/AAU (Acute Medical) and proven leadership experience (Afc band 6 or above).

Able to influence and manage change and conversant with current professional issues in relation to nursing, you can effectively manage an operational team, showing effective leadership with well-developed negotiating and interpersonal skills. You have already participated in audit related activities.

Skills

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
