Job Summary

The Senior Skin Cancer Specialist Nurse will have responsibility to deliver on all aspects of the charity’s
Skin Cancer Assessment clinic provided on board the charity’s mobile clinic “the Big Bus” and at Action Cancer House (ACH) Belfast. The Skin Cancer Assessment service is delivered in conjunction with the SPPG of the Department of Health, using their E Photo-Triage Dermatology model for the transferring of images and reports directly into secondary care for further assessment.

Additionally, the post holder will represent Action Cancer in relation to all matters pertaining to skin cancer including, but not limited to developing skin cancer education and preventive programmes, representing the charity at conferences, on the media, and on skin cancers working groups etc.

As part of the Action Cancer management team, the post holder will be required to work collaboratively across the whole charity to ensure the successful delivery of the charity’s 2022 - 2027 Strategic Plan, its supporting annual Operating Plans and income generation targets.

Whilst working with and reporting to the charity’s Head of Professional Services (HoPS) the postholder will have a high degree of autonomy and accountability for the delivery of a highly professional, quality, safe and effective service. The postholder will blend a significant proportion of direct, higher level clinical care (minimum of 75% of job role) with education, awareness, service development and evaluation activities.

Main areas of responsibility

  • Working alongside the Head of Professional Services (HOPS) and with other Service Managers, the postholder will have responsibility to deliver a highly professional and safe Skin Cancer assessment clinic.
  • Working with the Health Improvement and Evaluation Manager, the post holder will develop and provide education programmes / information regarding skin cancer prevention, establishing Action Cancer as the acknowledged skin cancer charity in Northern Ireland.
  • Provide/contribute to services/workshops/conferences specifically regarding prevention of skin cancer, targeting people/communities most at risk of developing cancer.
  • Produce an annual departmental operating plan, in accordance with the Strategic Plan, which sets out objectives, measurements and targets for the Skin Cancer team.
  • Management of the agreed income and expenditure budget for the service.
  • In conjunction with the Fundraising and Communications team, develop funding / income generation opportunities,
  • Contribute to media and PR requests.
  • Identify opportunities to develop partnerships, collaboration and joint initiatives with other charities and other key bodies where this is advantageous in the achievement of the charity’s strategic aims.
  • Negotiate and manage service level agreements and contracts between Action Cancer and external organisations.

1. Administration

  • Ensure the efficient administration and implementation of the charity’s Skin Cancer Assessment Service, ensuring adherence to all partner requirements including but not limited to data agreements, consent, data transfer, audit needs etc.
  • Liaise with the Services Administration Team, IT and other relevant departments to develop, refine and monitor central client record system to ensure effective and accurate record keeping for evaluation and audit purposes.
  • Manage the services requirements for CID (Client Information Database) ensuring accurate and up to date client records are maintained.
  • Prepare reports, briefing papers etc and maintain accurate records and statistics for internal and external use.

2. Management and development of staff

  • Responsibility for the day-to-day management and line management of the Skin Cancer Specialist Team including agreeing of individual PJP’s / PDP’s and the carrying out of Annual Performance Reviews.
  • Responsibility for maintaining and monitoring workload, clinical activity, staffing levels/skill mix ensuring action is taken to prevent compromised levels of service.
  • Positively contribute to the Action Cancer’s Management team, Professional Services Management Team and other cross departmental teams as required.

3. Standards, Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Revise and maintain high quality clinical standards for the service, ensuring appropriate quality assurance measures/processes etc are in place, regularly monitored and audited.
  • In conjunction with the charity’s Health Improvement and Evaluation Manager, undertake regular evaluations of the service to enable progress, effectiveness and the achievement of results to be assessed.
  • Produce KPI’s reports, monitoring and evaluation reports for both internal and external use.
  • In conjunction with the charity’s IT Manager ensure all relevant policies and procedures are regularly

    reviewed and updated. etc.

  • Response to consultation documents regards key health as appropriate, working alongside HoPS, Service Managers and other staff as appropriate.

4. Networking and external relations

  • Develop and maintain an effective network of key contacts with HSC Trusts, external agencies, other charities and other statutory services.
  • Represent the charity on relevant external bodies including strategy development and working groups.
  • When required, present reports and raise awareness of Action Cancer and its services at relevant seminars, conferences etc.
  • Develop in conjunction with the charity’s Communications Manager annual Skin Cancer Campaigns, providing robust evidence, information and personal stories.
  • Act as the charity’s authority and “go to” person in relation to all matters of skin cancer, including undertaking media interviews etc. as and when required.

5. Corporate Responsibilities

  • Undertake all duties in accordance with Action Cancer policies to ensure all Health and Safety requirements are met.
  • Liaise with all departmental heads and staff to develop strategic action plans/objectives, with appropriate measurements, in line with operational requirements, as directed by Head of Professional Services/CEO.
  • Ensure that Action Cancer’s policies, procedures and corporate high standards are adhered to at all times. Participating, as and when required in the investigation of complaints, accidents and incidents.
  • Contribute to the ongoing promotion of Action Cancer’s positive profile and image.

6. Additional duties

• Undertake any other reasonable duties be required by the Head of Professional Services

Essential Criteria

PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION

  1. Live NMC Registration on Part 1 (ADULT) of the NMC register.
  2. A minimum of 8 years post registration experience with at least 7 years in the area of skin cancer nursing.
  3. A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a senior cancer nursing role - Band 7 or above.
  4. Specialist Practice in dermatology at degree level or Masters level OR Dermatology Short Course to include skin cancer module at degree or Masters level.
  5. Experience of autonomous working in nurse led clinics and service development.
  6. Ability to demonstrate significant experience in skin cancer nursing practice including responsibility for case management, managing a clinical area, leading elements of service provision and supporting staff.
  7. Evidence of participating in regional, national and international networks
  8. Good organizational and negotiation skills, with practical experience of working with a range of individuals and organizations.
  9. High level of experience and competence with IT including all Microsoft packages.
  10. Experience in dealing with and media presentations.
  11. Flexible and available to work hours to meet the needs of the role - including evenings and weekends
  12. Hold a full, current driving license with business insurance and have access to the use of a car or some other appropriate form of transport to carry out the duties of the post in full

Desirable Criteria

  1. Educated to master’s level or above in advanced nursing practice
  2. Experience of direct management of clinical staff.
  3. Professional leadership experience within health and social care settings
  4. Evidence of clinical and educational/University teaching in Dermoscopy
  5. Evidence of research experience
