Purpose of the Role
To deliver safe, effective, and compassionate nursing care to individuals within a custodial setting, ensuring health needs are met in line with NHS standards. The postholder will provide primary care, long-term condition management, and urgent care to people in prison, promoting health, wellbeing, and rehabilitation while maintaining security and professional boundaries.
What You Will Do

Deliver high-quality general nursing care to patients in a prison setting.

Undertake comprehensive health assessments, triage, and care planning for new admissions and existing patients.

Manage acute and chronic conditions including diabetes, respiratory disease, cardiovascular conditions, and wound care.

Administer medications safely, including controlled drugs, in line with PGDs and Trust policy.

Provide emergency and urgent care, responding to medical incidents within the prison.
Key Responsibilities

Promote healthy lifestyles, including smoking cessation, substance misuse support, and health education.

Support patients with mental health needs, learning disabilities, and substance misuse issues in partnership with specialist teams.

Identify and manage safeguarding concerns, including vulnerability, self-harm, and suicide risk.

Work collaboratively with GPs, mental health teams, substance misuse services, prison officers, and allied health professionals.
Qualifications

Registered General Nurse (Adult) qualification.

Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Prison security clearance (or willingness to undergo vetting).
Person Specification

Experience working as an RGN in a primary care, community, or acute setting.

Ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care autonomously.

Experience managing long-term conditions and delivering clinical interventions.
