This role supports the multidisciplinary PAS pathway and provides specialist midwifery input across key clinical areas.

The post‑holder will assist with the weekly FMU scan list, providing counselling to women undergoing PAS‑related imaging. A foundational understanding of ultrasound findings will support effective communication and patient preparation.

They will contribute to the PAS complex surgery list, offering continuity and specialist midwifery presence.

The role includes supporting the antenatal clinic where PAS patients are routinely reviewed, ensuring coordinated care, timely follow‑up, and clear communication across the MDT.

Dedicated admin time will involve triaging referrals, contacting patients, coordinating and sharing relevant reports, maintaining data collection, auditing outcomes, reviewing unnecessary referrals, and monitoring late referrals to support pathway improvement.

Clinical Practice

Maintain accurate, timely and professional documentation in line with Trust policies, national standards and regulatory requirements.

Apply counselling skills when delivering difficult news, supporting bereavement, or discussing outcomes related to antenatal screening and PAS‑associated risks.

Work collaboratively with specialist teams and other relevant MDT members to ensure seamless care.

Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of PAS guidelines, quality standards and best practice, ensuring care delivery remains evidence‑based and aligned with national recommendations.

Monitor and evaluate the quality of PAS care, identifying variances, addressing concerns, and taking proactive steps to improve pathway performance and patient experience.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Practice

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate midwifery care for women on the PAS pathway, ensuring privacy, dignity and personalised support throughout their antenatal and postnatal journey.

Use advanced interpersonal and communication skills when supporting women and families experiencing complex issues such as safeguarding concerns, domestic violence, mental health challenges, substance misuse or sexual health matters.

Communicate complex and sensitive information with empathy and clarity, ensuring women and their families feel supported and reassured during discussions about diagnosis, treatment plans and potential complications.

Apply counselling skills when delivering difficult news, supporting bereavement, or discussing outcomes related to antenatal screening and PAS‑associated risks.

Management

Ensure that the day-to-day service delivered as required by the service needs

Promote best practice in health, safety and security.

Monitor and maintain the efficient use of physical and/or financial resources within the current financial constraints reporting any deviances to the manager promptly.

Liaise with the multidisciplinary team and multi-agencies co-coordinating and participating in case discussions as required.

Ensure that the service is a positive learning experience for students and junior staff and meet the necessary standards for placement.

Identify and manage challenging behaviours as directed by trust policies

Recognize, communicate and reward the achievements of staff in a learning capacity and provide constructive feedback, advice and on-going practice.

Provide professional leadership and support to colleagues.

Lead and develop the implementation of care pathways for the services of women on the PAS care pathway.

Ensure that essential information on the client’s condition and progress is recorded appropriately according to NMC guidelines.

Monitor progress of work recognising changing priorities and implement corrective actions within own limits and informing the relevant people.

Act as a mentor and assessor to assigned learners and teach and support them through their competency assessments as required.

Lead in the appraisal process for a defined group of staff in accordance with trust policies.

Communicate clearly with colleagues and provide them with opportunities to contribute to the planning and organization of work.

Deal personally with clients, families and carers in order to aid resolution of complaints. Report all incidents, complaints or accidents to the Matron and assist in their investigation and resolution.

Monitor and manage sickness and absence in accordance with trust policies.

Have active involvement in the recruitment and selection process.

Monitor, control and store resources/supplies according to the requirements and specifications of the clinical environment.

Implement and propose changes to policies/practices in own area.

Participate effectively to evaluation studies (e.g. patient satisfaction surveys and audit).

Identify and take action in accordance with trust policy where necessary to address discrimination and oppression.

Monitor and maintain health, safety and security of self and others in own work area. Adhering to lone worker policy.

Take immediate and appropriate action including supporting others to manage risks in relation to adverse incident reporting via the hospital incident reporting system.

Identify training needs in health and safety whilst identifying appropriate resources.

Professional Development

Undertake Midwifery care consistent with evidence-based practice, transferring and applying knowledge and skills to meet client/family’s needs.

Influence and prioritize the development of knowledge, ideas and work practice in self and others.

Maintain a high clinical standard and facilitate application of theory to practice.

Assess, identify and evaluate own knowledge and practice needs in relation to knowledge and skills required to meet the demands of the job.

Undertake annual mandatory training updates and other relevant courses in line with Trust and local policies.

Promote the profession of Midwifery and ensure midwifery care is evidence-based and in line with best practice.

Take an active role in the implementation of the emerging Nursing and Midwifery agenda.

Embrace the public health agenda and support the delivery of local plans e.g. breastfeeding, smoking cessation.

Undertake data collection effectively using the agreed systems.

Contribute to audit/benchmarking within the clinical area supporting the introduction of a change in practice if indicated.

Accountable for own professional actions undertaking all duties having regard to the NMC ‘Code of Professional conduit’ for the nurse, midwife and health visitor and their professional contribution to Clinical Governance

Lead and develop in new service innovations as required

Child Protection

Responsibility for instigating and communicating child protection issues to professionals within the maternity unit, ensuring documentation follows agreed pathways.
