A Podcast For Nurses: Cup of Care, Episode 9
In this episode, Janet and Nikki discuss a virtual placement as well as using a ‘wellbeing wheel’ to identify how you’re progressing in areas like looking after yourself and setting boundaries.
Completing A Virtual Placement
Having it so closely resembling real life means that the Trust can really raise the standards of everybody’s expertise in a very safe way… you think emergencies aren’t going to happen, but they do and when they do you want to feel prepared, and this is the opportunity to practise those skills.
Using A ‘Wellbeing Wheel’ To Track Your Progress
It’s an opportunity to have a look at areas that are a bit ‘wobblier’ than others and see if those would be the ones that you would like to focus on and address.
Looking After Yourself
In terms of wellbeing, it’s very easy to talk about it and it’s not always easy to put it into practice… when you are a compassionate being you do tend to give to other people first.
Setting Boundaries
Sometimes we can be people pleasers because that is part of our makeup, so boundaries with regard to wellbeing and protecting yourself is more about being able to say no.
Being A Team Player
It’s all about the collaboration, the cohesiveness of your colleagues and all having each other’s back… as a nurse and in nursing generally that really does happen, and it’s one of the main reasons that people tend to stay in their jobs.
Using Your Voice
In a huge organisation like the NHS and the environment of university sometimes it’s not always that easy to share what it is that’s on your mind and to have your voice heard.
