A Podcast For Nurses: Cup of Care, Episode 8

"An open and frank podcast on Nursing" - #CupofCare

In this episode, Janet talks about the latest technology in nurse training, her views on student loans and discusses nursing as a profession, answering the question ‘what it is to be a nurse?'

Latest Technology In Patient Simulation

I’m about to start a SimMan placement, the latest technology in patient simulation where you can see the heart, blood pressure and respiration rate, with a face that talks to you. You start responding to it like a real person. It less like a paper exercise as you really feel like you are in that moment but it’s in a very safe place to do it.

Thinking Of Student Loans As A Tax

It’s better not to think of it as a loan, it’s better to think of it as a tax because people will pay it back through their salaries which mean’s it's dependant on what people earn. It switches the whole process calling it a tax, it's really powerful.

Facts You Need To Know About Student Loans

The main thing is to remember there are three things about UK student loans that I want people to understand because when you understand these three things, finances will not be the reason not to go to University.

The NMC Code of Conduct And ‘What It Is To Be A Nurse?'

We use the NMC code as an underpinning basis at University. I’m still coming to terms with ‘what it is to be a nurse?’ A nurse is someone who has flexibility within their own role. If you ask any nurse what they are going to be doing tomorrow they won’t know. They are more likely to say they don’t know what's coming tomorrow and that’s one of the things I love about my job. Because we are dealing with human beings.

Nursing As A Profession

The work we do is of a standard that can be classed as professional because it’s skilled, we have technical knowledge and its evidence based. On another level, you can be professional in how you deal with situations and an unprofessional mindset is more about an inflexibility to cope with the ever-changing situations and patients you come across and being able to respond appropriately to all of them. Nurses do strive for that personalised care of all their patients to the best degree they can.
