The surgical wards at the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) include Trauma & Orthopaedics, Thoracic, Ear Nose & Throat, Maxillofacial, Upper and Lower Gastrointestinal subspecialties, as well as Surgical & Trauma Assessment Unit and a Pre-Operative Assessment Unit.

You will be working closely with passionate surgeons, and a range of allied healthcare professionals and specialist nurses to provide fundamental holistic care to your patients. The team are pioneers in Enhanced Recovery principles to ensure patients receive the high quality care that these wards aspire to achieve; ensuring safe, timely discharges resulting in efficient bed flow and patient satisfaction. The wards and departments have strong, supportive leaders who will mentor and support your growth, opening doors to further your nursing career.

Currently, we have opportunities for qualified and experienced staff in the following areas:
  • Trauma & Orthopaedics Wards A602 + A604 There are two acute Trauma & Orthopaedic wards - A604 has 22 beds & specialises in elderly (silver) trauma. A602 has 18 beds and takes the younger trauma / bone infections and limb reconstruction work. Both wards have a dynamic multi-disciplinary team approach to patient care. Their philosophy is to promote a safe, calm and relaxed environment for patients and their relatives.
  • A700 an acute surgical ward specialising in thoracic and head and neck surgery. Providing a great opportunity to look after patients who have undergone complex major surgery including; lung resections and laryngectomies. You will enhance specific surgical skills such as chest drain and tracheostomy management.
  • A800 another acute surgical ward, specialising in gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary surgery looking after patients with new cancer diagnoses and chronic illnesses alike. You will have great development opportunities in this incredibly varied environment caring for patients that have undergone oespophagectomies and gastrectomies to liver and major bowel resections
  • Surgical & Trauma Assessment Unit (A609) specialises in the initial assessment of Acute Surgical and Trauma patients referred by their GP's or the Emergency Department. Equipped with a mix of inpatient beds and treatment chairs for patients waiting for surgery, recovering from surgery or being treated conservatively. A great location to develop your clinical examination and pain management skills, problem solving ability, discharge planning, and shift co-ordination experience
  • Pre Op Assessment Centre: A606 A purpose built pre-operative assessment and surgical admissions department which serves a wide range of our surgical specialities. This includes DOSA (day of surgery admissions unit). The department is an evolving yet important service ensuring that every patient's health is fully optimised for their operations and procedures.
