A opportunity has arisen to join the team supporting patients and their families in the Diagnostic Pathway for Respiratory Oncology at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. The work is varied and the post holder will support and see patients with suspected lung cancer on in-patient wards and in out-patient clinics, and attend respiratory and oncology multidisciplinary meetings. You will be a point of contact for patients who are going through this diagnostic stage and will initiate contact with in-patients who have a new or suspected lung cancer diagnosis. You will therefore need to be able to communicate effectively and sensitively to the patients needs as well as liaise with our own team and other hospital teams. This is to ensure that patients are supported and proceed quickly through the diagnostic pathway.
The post also includes being involved in the diagnostic procedures of linear and radial endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and standard bronchoscopy. The team provides EBUS for patients from hospitals across South-East England.
The multidisciplinary team currently comprises of a full-time Band 6, a 0.4wte Band 7 nurse already in post, three Consultants and their junior teams supported by the Patient Pathway Co-ordinator.
We are looking for a skilled and competent individual who can demonstrate their clinical, organisational and administrative skills and abilities to deliver person-centered care to a high standard in a dynamic, demanding and target but patient focussed clinical pathway. Knowledge and experience in the care for patients with lung cancer would be desirable as would teaching skills. However, we are looking to develop the post holder and the current Band 6 to be ready to take on a Band 7 role in the next few months within this service. Therefore you will also be supported with a structured training programme and competency based framework.
The team are looking for a senior nurse to develop the pathway for lung cancer patients so that patients flow seamlessly through the diagnostic, interventional, clinic and multidisciplinary meeting stages that this team deals with. By ensuring a strong knowledge of your patients before other teams take on the next stages of care, you will ensure that the team are credible, motivated, cohesive and that nurses have the expertise to care for these patients reasonably autonomously. The role will require you to further strength the working and education links between other lung cancer nursing teams within this Trust and externally There is the potential for so much of this service to be more nurse-led and so excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. You will have a strong work ethic, be able to self direct your workload and work well as part of a team. There are core clinic nurses and ward nurses who would benefit from your ability to share your knowledge that will enhance their development as specialist generalist nurses, the clinical nurses specialists of the future.
