Job overview
  • To provide patient-centred nursing care, aiming to achieve the highest possible standards of care delivery and clinical outcomes, in accordance with the UH Sussex Nursing and Midwifery Strategy.
  • Maintain effective communication with patients, relatives and the MDT about routine and daily activities
  • Efficient use of resources
  • In conjunction with the MDT provide peri-operative care to the patients of Ansty ward.
  • Assist in the promotion of a conducive learning environment for all staff and students.
  • Deputise in the absence of more senior nursing staff.


Main duties of the job
  • Responsible for assessment, planing and implementation of care for a group of patients and assists in the interpretation of data relevant to the patient's condition and progress.
  • Recognising patient deterioration and escalating appropriately using the NEWS 2 scoring sysem
  • Documenting all cares on paper charts and onto electronic recording systems as needed.
  • Uses advanced communication skills when listening and assessing patients in the clinical environment.
  • Works closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team to facilitate the continuity of care thereby enhancing the patient experience.
  • To act as the patient advocate by ensuring an understanding of consultation outcomes and choices.
  • To communicate sensitive information and provide psychological support for patients receiving sensitive/ bad news.
  • Ability to impart health education giving advice and support as necessary.
  • Handles complaints and plaudits in a professional manner and reports any incident to senior nursing staff.
  • Undertakes checking of clinical and personal data collection on multiple occasions daily.
  • Effectively liaises with ward managers, site management team, discharge lounge and other departments.
  • Liaises with the ambulance service regarding transfer between departments and/or home address.
