Job Description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Clinical Practice
    • To participate in maintaining standards of hygiene, cleanliness and infection control, reporting problems as appropriate
    • To assist the patients with their hygiene requirements as deemed appropriate by the nursing team
    • To ensure that equipment is clean at all times, stored safely when not in use and report faults as appropriate
    • To assist in setting up and preparing patient areas appropriately to the clinical area (including sterile trolleys or specific equipment in specific clinical areas).
    • To ensure that ward stock levels of linen, sterile supplies are maintained at all times in conjunction with the sister in charge/ward manager.
    • To assist ward staff with general collection/delivery of items necessary to ensure effective operational management of ward/department
    • To collect blood products and deliver specimens as required
    • To implement infection control/health and safety procedures relevant to CSSD and other equipment
    • To assist with infant feeding under supervision if required by the sister in charge or Senior Nurse
    • To assist with patient feeding under supervision if required by the sister in charge or Senior Nurse
    • To accompany the qualified nurse during the transport of children to various departments within the Trust.
    • To escort children to various departments within the Trust without a qualified nurse when deemed appropriate
    • To receive visitors to the unit.
    • To assist in the maintenance of up to date, comprehensive and accurate records in accordance with current legal requirements.
    • To assist in the maintenance and safekeeping of patients property in line with Trust policy
    • To assist in the admission and discharge of patients.
    • To cleaning and labelling equipment in line with the decontamination policy
    • To clean bed spaces and label clean in line with the decontamination policy
    • To check commodes are clean and labelled in line with the decontamination policy
    • To make up daily chloraclean, label and sign the bottle and checklist.
    • To ensuring alcohol rubs are replenished across the ward and outside the entrance to the ward
    • To report and document safeguarding concerns in line with Trust safeguarding procedures


  • Customer Care/Administration


    • To ensure that all parents and relatives are welcomed and orientated to the ward environment
    • To assist with clerical and ward administrative duties, including data management, photocopying, transporting of equipment/data/ paperwork to other departments as directed by the sister in charge or Senior Nurse only
    • To provide clear and effective information and communication, both verbally and in writing. Promptly referring enquiries to the relevant person
    • To maintain confidentiality at all times, in and out of the hospital environment
    • To demonstrate an awareness of the different cultural, ethnic and religious needs
    • To ensure and prepare a sufficient supply of admission packs and other standard forms relevant to the ward. To distribute post appropriately to individuals.
    • To answer the telephone/personnel inquiries courteously and liaise appropriately.
    • To run errands at the request of the nurse in charge or Senior Nurse.
    • To prepare milk feeds in the special milk kitchen and train other staff members in this following training.


  • Personal and Professional Development


    • To ensure that you receive expectations of your work from ward staff at the beginning of the shift.
    • To adhere to, and work within the code of conduct for clinical support workers at King's College Hospital
    • To be able to identify with support own development needs, completing a competency document and learning objectives within a specified time frame and as agreed by manager. To actively participate in annual individual performance review
    • To ensure own attendance at mandatory study days and training (BLS, manual handling etc.) as required by their team leader or Senior Nurse
    • To share own clinical skills and teach less experienced staff
    • To teach new HCAs and staff the correct use of designated equipment as appropriate.
    • To comply with the Trust guidelines on E-rostering and implement own requests via employee on line


  • Management


    • To manage an agreed workload with support from colleagues and senior staff
    • To supervise and support new Healthcare Assistants
    • To work within and support the multidisciplinary team, contributing ideas toward future developments
    • To maintain effective communication and professional relationships with all areas within the care group and associ
