Job Description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities Provide strong clinical leadership skills, supporting, energising, inspiring and empowering others in pursuit of a shared vision to ensure the effective management of the ward / department
To assist and support the Sister / charge Nurse in the establishment of an efficient working environment, making the most effective and efficient use of staff, supplies and services
In co-ordinating the day-to-day management of the clinical area, delegates duties and care appropriately, whilst maintaining overall responsibility
Ensures that staffing and skill mix is maintained, at all times, to a level that does not compromise patient safety, including appropriate request, deployment and supervision of temporary staff
To be involved in the development, assessment and implementation of guidelines, protocols and pathways
To deputise for the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse in their absence
To attend and participate in monthly departmental meetings in the absence of the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse
Ensure that nursing care delivered within the team / ward / department is compliant with legal, professional and organisational standards
To act as a self-directed practitioner who directs, provides and evaluates the highest standard of evidence based nursing care to patients within their own home, founded on agreed management care plans and protocols.
Working autonomously to manage a caseload of patients, acting as a lead assuming responsibility and accountability for assessing, implementing and evaluating care for the designated clinical area
Demonstrate the ability to perform comprehensive patient assessments based upon history taking and physical examination. (Training will be provided)
To work independently and without direct supervision in a variety of clinical settings Trust wide and in the community, prioritising workload in a variety of clinical settings to meet the regular, unpredictable situations that may occur within this role.
Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication including intraveinous drugs eg. Antibiotics, Diuretics, Fluids.

Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse with the NMC
  • For a substantive position. The applicant must have successfully completed an Emergency Nursing or Post Graduate Acute Care specialist course.


Knowledge Essential criteria
  • Foundation level of understanding regarding the acute care needs of patients
  • Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practice


Experience Essential criteria
  • The post holders will have at a minimum 18-months experience of working within the acute and emergency environment.
  • They will have completed Level 1 RCN competencies relevant to the area


Skills Essential criteria
  • All applicants will be able to demonstrate through their portfolio the repertoire of clinicals skills they currently possess. This will be built upon through completion of local competencies.
  • Working in acute areas can be stressful, applicants will be required to discuss how they deal with stress to ensure a healthy work lifestyle balance
  • Post holders will have experience of undertaking clinical audits and working with software systems such as Microsoft Word.
