Job Description
The OHN will assist and support the Senior Occupational Health Nurse (SOHN) in the establishment of an efficient working environment, making the most effective and efficient use of staff resources.
In addition, the OHN will support the SOHN to implement local initiatives within the OHS; ensure clinics run efficiently and meet the needs of the service user group.
Act as Team Leader coordinating the day-to-day management of the clinical area, delegate duties appropriately whilst maintaining overall responsibility.
Be involved in the development, assessment and implementation of guidelines, protocols and pathways to promote uniformity of provision; act as mentor to junior Nurse Advisors.
Deputise for the SOHN in their absence; assist with line management of junior staff
Attend and participate in departmental and team meetings.
Be involved with managing local projects when required and organise own work and manage own caseload and practice, identifying and maintaining supportive networks for self and other staff members.

Person specification
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- BSc/1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification/training and experience
- Evidence of ongoing professional and academic development in relevant area of speciality
- Registered Nurse on the NMC register
- SPCHN or working towards
- Post registration qualification in, or ability to demonstrate relevant Occupational Health experience and competence (including those currently undertaking a formal qualification in this area)
Desirable criteria
- NEBOSH certificate
- Management qualification or equivalent experience
- Mentorship/Teaching Qualification
- Health Education
Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial post registration experience in general nursing
- Substantial Occupational Health experience
- Supervision of junior staff
Desirable criteria
- NHS Occupational Health experience
Skills
Essential criteria
- Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues including NHS /DH /HSE legislation
- Ability to assess clients presenting to Occupational Health and to plan and provide specialist advice dependent upon their particular health care need and work related issues
- Supervisory experience of junior members of a team
- Ability to be able to decide how best to achieve expected results, whilst acting within clearly defined policies/ procedures and codes of conduct.
- Proficient IT skills including Microsoft Office
- Ability to prioritise workload, achieving balance between clinical work and other aspects of the post
- Ability and willingness to work flexibly according to service needs
- Awareness of clinical governance and risk management issues
- Strong motivation to work in the occupational health speciality
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of travel health advice and immunisations
- Commercial services Occupational Health provision
