Sandwich placement year opportunity - circa £10k p.a.

BSUH Pathology (at RSCH / PRH) is offering funded year placements for motivated Biomedical Science students commencing Oct 2022.

In order to become a professionally registered Biomedical Scientist, you must demonstrate that you meet Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency through a combination of your academic qualifications and period of training in an IBMS approved laboratory.

The placement year offered will be based in a single area of the pathology department and involve compilation of an Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Registration Training Portfolio. This will enable you to build up a record of evidence, showing achievement of the competencies and standards outlined in the Registration Training Portfolio to meet the HCPC Standards of Proficiency for biomedical scientists. Students who complete their portfolio and demonstrate appropriate professional orientation may be put forward for the IBMS verification process at the end of the placement year, enabling them to qualify for application to the HCPC register to be considered for professional registration soon after final BSc graduation.

In order to be eligible you must have passed all 2 nd year modules of your

BMS degree course. The placement incorporates a 10-credit module,

Clinical Biomedical Science Placement (BY351).

Attendance in the workplace is full time (37.5 hours/week) for 48 weeks (with no weekend / unsocial hours commitment), actual salary is intended to be 0.5WTE at band 4.

Main duties of the job

During the training placement, the post-holder will undertake a range of complex investigations using a variety of techniques, including manual, semi-automated and automated techniques on highly specialised analysers to assist in the diagnosis of disease, and monitoring of treatment.

The post-holder will work as part of the team of Biomedical Scientists and support staff, learning to provide an efficient, cost-effective and timely clinical service to patients.

The post-holder is expected to maintain high professional standards, whilst undertaking education and training in the hospital laboratories in order to build up a record of evidence, showing achievement of the competencies and standards outlined in the Registration Training Portfolio to meet the HCPC Standards of Proficiency for biomedical scientists.
Students who complete their portfolio and demonstrate appropriate professional orientation may be put forward for the IBMS verification process at the end of the placement year, enabling them to qualify for application to the HCPC register to be considered for professional registration on graduation.
