Job Description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities Principal Duties
  • To develop a specialist MS  service for patients within the Surrey Downs area and to manage a clinical caseload.
  • Collaboration with the multidisciplinary team in order to develop a strategy relating to the care of people with MS at all stages of  the disease process.
  • Development of support systems for those newly diagnosed with MS or undergoing investigations.
  • Care and support of people with MS receiving disease management treatment
  • Development, delivery and evaluation of a plan of care relating to symptom management, referring to other members of the multidisciplinary team as necessary but acting as a key worker where appropriate
  • Development of  MS clinics to provide people with MS and their carers with information and support regarding their MS and its associated symptoms
  • Liaison with community, social services and voluntary organisation staff in order to develop existing services for people with MS
  • To communicate highly complex and sensitive information to patients and their carers
  • Development, execution and evaluation of a teaching programme for both multidisciplinary team and for people with MS
  • To provide clinical advice to health care professionals in specialist area
  • To have a highly informative knowledge of the pathology of disease and a range of care pathways/treatment options relating to MS
  • To deliver specialised care/care pathways for  people with MS
  • To deliver specialised care/care pathways for newly diagnosed patients with MS
  • To provide specialist knowledge and advice to influence the Service strategic agenda
  • Clinical practice
  • To give direct expert care in speciality area
  • To demonstrate specialist knowledge and skills
  • In conjunction with medical staff, modify patient medication
  • To participate in clinical supervision
  • To maintain own expert levels of clinical competence
  • To promote and facilitate research and evidence based practice in multiple sclerosis management
  • To establish, implement and monitor practice guidelines, standards, policies and protocols/care pathways relating to MS
  • Where appropriate to be involved in policy/procedure changes/development
  • To use initiative to interpret policies/procedures in relation to MS and advise SDHC accordingly
  • To maintain a high profile in the clinical area acting as a role model for other health care professionals
  • To educate patients in managing their  disease through self care and expert patient programmes
  • To be aware of and act upon, when necessary, procedures that are in place to protect vulnerable individuals
  • To organise case conferences for people with complex needs.
  • Education
  • To provide in-depth information for people with MS about the disease, its treatment and symptom management
  • To be a specialist resource of expertise to the organisation
  • To teach health care professionals about MS, its treatment and symptom management
  • To establish a group for the education and support of those newly diagnosed with MS
  • To develop an information database of support services e.g. MS therapy groups, charities, counsellors for people with MS and health care professionals and facilitate their use by people with MS
  • To establish links with other MS nurse specialists and MS specialist networks in order to share and/or to learn from examples of good practice
  • To participate in professional and clinical supervision.
  • To be responsible for developing and sustaining own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness in accordance with PREP requirements and to maintain a professional profile
  • Research, audit and quality
  • To maintain records as required, according to SDHC procedures
  • To collaborate with others in the development of new policies and protocols for the management/treatment of people with MS
  • To use research findings critically in order to develop practice
  • To generate questions for research arising out of practice and to collaborate with others in investigating these questions
  • To work with the audit department to monitor effectiveness of role
  • To use research to develop the use of disease modifying treatments for people with MS

  • Person specification Relevant nursing qualification and experience Essential criteria
    • Experience as registered nurse

    • Working in field of MS currently

    • Experience of working within Neurology

    • Experience managing DMTs
