We are looking to recruit a highly motivated individual to the role of Band 5 Staff Nurse for the Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC). This is an exciting opportunity to start a new service within the Emergency Services Division, as part of the NHS long term plan to provide a same day services 24 hours a day for all speciality patients.

The band 5 staff nurse role will be suited to multi skilled staff with specialist skills in acute and/or emergency care will thrive in a busy, fast-paced environment. This will be an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge and skills required to manage a variety of patients within a highly skilled multi-disciplinary team.

The ideal candidates will be dynamic and forward thinking with a progressive approach to enhancing patient care and safety within urgent, emergency and acute care services. In addition to excellent clinical skills a good working knowledge of care pathways and the patient journey is required, as is priority focus on communication, safe discharge planning and safe patient transfer

Main duties of the job

To work according to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines as a named nurse or key worker (with facilitation) for a defined group of patients and take responsibility for:
  • Protecting and supporting the health of individual patients and clients
  • Assessment of care and health education needs
  • Development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care including discharge planning for each patient


  • Under supervision, to gain experience and skills in:
    • Clinical practice
    • Facilitation and teaching
    • Management (as appropriate)


  • To work in accordance with UCLH Nursing and Midwifery Strategy and Core

  • Standards and contribute towards achieving the Trust's "Top 10" Objectives
  • To maintain effective communication
  • To provide a high standard of holistic patient-centred care
  • *To take charge of the ward/department in the absence of senior nursing staff following performance review against the agreed KSF outline and progression through the first gateway

    CLINICAL BOARD

    The Medicine Board incorporates the specialties of Critical Care, Pathology, Emergency Services, Medical Specialties, Infection and Clinical Support, led by the Medical Director.
    SAME DAY EMERGENCY CARE (Emergency Services Division)

    The Division is led by a Clinical Director & Divisional Manager, supported by a Matron, a Senior Nurse & general manager. The Emergency Services Division comprises the Emergency Department (ED), the Acute Admissions Unit and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC).

    The post will be based in the Same Day Emergency Care unit at University College Hospital. It comprises of 30 assessment spaces and 3 treatment areas. This is an exciting opportunity in a new a new service as part of the NHS long term plan to provide same day services 24 hours a day for all specialty patients. The unit has recently opened and receives patients from GP's and other external providers and from the Emergency Department.
