Job Description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Tasks and responsibilities include:
  • Dispensing
  • Final checking of screened prescriptions
  • Medicine reconciliation
  • Assessing of patients own medicines
  • Patients counselling
  • Managing ward(s) stock control
  • Audit and project work
  • Supervising and training of junior team member(s)
  • Participating in the weekend rota

You will already hold a recognised accredited checking pharmacy technician (ACPT) qualification. Applications from those working towards such a qualification would be considered and if successful at interview would initially be at a lower grade (band 4) until the qualification is complete.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
  • Registered as a pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • NVQ Pharmacy services Level 3 plus an accredited underpinning knowledge
  • Completion of or working towards a recognised Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification


Desirable criteria
  • Practice/Educational Supervisor qualification
  • Medicine Management accreditation


Experience
Essential criteria
  • Working in a busy hospital dispensary
  • Medicines management experience at ward based
  • Supervising and mentoring pharmacy staff
  • Checking of medicines in a hospital pharmacy environment


Desirable criteria
  • Working in a children's hospital dispensary
  • Supervising the day to day running of a dispensary
  • Stock level management and maintenance


Skills
Essential criteria
  • Ability to dispense accurately to set standards
  • Effective customer service skills
  • Ability to communicate routine, more complex and sensitive information effectively using clear written and spoken English
  • Ability to accurately record patient medicine reconciliation
  • Ability to counsel and give advice to patients/their carers on their/child's medications
  • Ability to accurately assess suitability of patient's own medication
  • Pharmacy computer and IT skills
  • Ability to prioritise and organise routine daily tasks using own initiative
  • Ability to motivate self and others
  • Ability to work accurately under pressure
  • Accurate numeracy skills
  • Able to demonstrate a good understanding of the context of hospital pharmacy and the NHS
  • Ability to work to set procedures
  • Ability to clearly and accurately complete complex routine and non-routine documentation
  • Ability to final check of clinically screened prescriptions
  • Ability to, plan, organise and deliver, training and assessment


Desirable criteria
  • Ability to write standard operating procedures
  • Familiar in using JAC Electronic and prescribing and medicine administrations (ePMA) records eg Medchart/EPR/e-noting
  • Delivering induction and training
  • Ability to undertake recruitment and selection of pharmacy staff
  • Ability to conduct appraisals /performance development reviews
  • Ability of working in multi-disciplinary teams
