Job Description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
4. Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Specialist.
o Be the first point of contact and expert resource in the
safeguarding needs of people with learning disability and the
correct internal and legal processes in maintaining their safety
within the available relevant legal frameworks.
o Provide practical support and expert knowledge to clinicians within
HIPSS to follow internal policy and National Guidance around the
safeguarding of vulnerable adults and Mental Capacity Act/Court of
Protection Issues.
o Provide both formal and informal training and guidance to
Clinical staff within the acute services relating to all aspects of
learning disabilities and autism
o Provide regular updates to and clinical groups and
safeguarding operational group meeting on all performance
indicators and issues regarding learning disability and autism,
referrals and LeDeR enquiries being undertaken and the
outcomes of those referrals and enquiries.
o To be legally and professionally accountable for all clinical work
undertaken by the learning disability and autism acute services
team and to individually practice at an advanced level of
professional autonomy and accountability that is within National
Guidelines and Organisational policies.
o Together with the team member actively support a caseload of
people with learning disability referred for acute learning
disability nursing services including health case management of
those with identified complex physical health presentations
and/or social care circumstances.
o Provide expert clinical supervision to nurses and students on
placement fostering a culture of openness, learning and
development.
o To share knowledge and expertise, acting as an expert resource
to others within and outside the organisation.
o Use expert clinical reasoning skills to provide specialist support
and advice to the community learning disability nurses.
o To maintain up to date client records in accordance with
service policy.
o Develop and deliver packages of training to health and social
care staff, unilaterally and in partnership with other
multidisciplinary colleagues, on a range of healthcare topics
pertaining to people with learning disabilities.
o Strategic Liaison with partners in the health and social care
economy to meet defined objectives and facilitate new
projects.

Education and qualification
Essential criteria
  • Extensive Knowledge of Legislatory Frameworks relevant to this post.
  • Degree level or equivalent learning disability nursing experience.
  • Current NMC registration as Learning Disability Branch nurse and no outstanding fitness to practice investigations./NMC registered RN with relevant experience


Desirable criteria
  • Working experience of supporting people with autism


Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
  • Experience of successful supervision and management of nurses.
  • Demonstrable ability to work with families and their diverse needs.
  • Ability to facilitate change in a complex organisation, and influence statutory, voluntary and private organisations.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to use own initiative to prioritise work and work unsupervised.


Desirable criteria
  • Experience in writing reports for a variety of audiences


Experience
Essential criteria
  • Experience of leading and managing models of complex health coordination.
  • Experience of providing training packages to a range of professional groups.
  • Experience of providing leadership to clinicians working with this client group.


Desirable criteria
  • Experience in working with older people with learning disabilities
  • Experience working with people with learning disabilities who have mental health needs
