Job Description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and well being and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.

To observe the rules, policies, procedures and standards of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.

To observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff.

To be responsible, with management support, for their own personal development and to actively contribute to the development of colleagues.

Infection Control Statement

The post holder has an important responsibility for and contribution to make to infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role.

These requirements are set out in the National Code of Practice on Infection Control and in local policies and procedures which will be made clear during your induction and subsequent refresher training. These standards must be strictly complied with at all times.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Clinical Practice

To deliver evidence based care at all times to a specific group of people

To practice within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and adhere to this at all times

To be aware of the need to adhere to the trusts policy on valuing equality and diversity in the work place incorporating the patients a/visitors and staff perspective

To have regard for each patients culture and religious beliefs and to respect each patients privacy, dignity, gender and sexuality.

To acknowledge personal limitations in patient care and seek advice from staff members.

To assess, plan and evaluate individualised programmes of care for patients in partnership with the patient, their carers and the multidisciplinary team using a family centred approach to care.

To be involved with nursing audits.

To report adverse incidents which occur in the department as per policy

To identify and assist in any child protection issues and make referrals to the appropriate multidisciplinary team members including social services.

Maintain effective communication with colleagues and patients and their families.

Education of children and young people and their carers regarding their illness/injury, health promotion and prevention of future illness/injury

To ensure care is delivered in accordance with latest evidence based practice guidelines

To maintain up to date and comprehensive records of care in accordance with NMC and legal requirements

To maintain patient confidentiality at all times To practice within the Kings values.

To support junior colleagues, students, and visitors to the department.

To know own role within the Trust Major Incident Policy.

To ensure that patients and parents/carers are informed as appropriate and consent is obtained according to current policy.

Education and Research

To assist in the teaching and practice development of junior colleagues and students

To demonstrate the use of information and research findings to support and promote evidence based practice within the clinical area

To participate in research and audit within the unit

To assist in setting up protocols and guidelines to enhance best practice

To assist in auditing of these protocols and guidelines

To participate in Trust and Care Group initiatives to develop nursing practice

Involvement in link roles with in the paediatric ED


To manage an agreed workload with support from colleagues and senior staff as appropriate

To ensure that all Trust and local policies, protocols and procedures are adhered to by colleagues as appropriate

To work within and support the multi-disciplinary team

To maintain effective communication and professional relationships with all areas within the Care Group and with associated clinical areas within the Trust

To participate with the monitoring of standards of hygiene and cleanliness on the ward / department and report as appropriate

To share knowledge and skills developed with other members of the multidisciplinary team

To participate in reflection & / or Clinical Supervision sessions as provided
