Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Main duties and responsibilities

Professional responsibilities
  • To be able to deputise in the absence of the Critical Care Audit Coordinator by becoming an expert on Critical Care Activity and providing guidance, advice and support to colleagues.


  • The post holder must, at all times, respect patients' confidentiality and the confidentiality of electronically stored personal data in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.


  • To demonstrate an understanding and the use of and Critical Care Scoring Systems and The Critical Care Minimum Data Set (CCMDS).


Information management


  • To understand national Critical Care data collection and reporting requirements and advise the appropriate multi-disciplinary team members on these.


  • To maintain up-to-date knowledge of all relevant Critical Care and NHS issues, initiatives and research.


  • To attend all relevant critical care meetings and present and disseminate information and identify local audit priorities.


  • To work with colleagues in the collection, uploading and validating of data utilizing the MedICUs data base.


  • To support the development of Critical Care data collection in line with National and Local guidelines


  • The post holder will draw on previous specialist clinical experience and knowledge to ensure optimum and accurate collection of data.


  • To ensure all reports requested are appropriate and completed accurately, in the required format and in the time frame agreed.

Professional and Personal development
  • Participates in team meetings so fair and equal opportunities are given to share knowledge and ideas with colleagues.


  • The post holder is expected to develop their IT skills by completing the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) or equivalent qualification.


  • Through the Trust's appraisal process and development of personal development plan identifies their educational and professional needs.


  • Attends training days and conferences relevant to Critical care audit


The job description is not intended to be exhaustive and it is likely that duties may be altered from time to time in the light of changing circumstances and after consultation with the post holder.

The post holder might be required to work across the Trust at any time throughout the duration of his/her contract, which may entail travel and working at different hospital.

Person specification

Qualifications & Knowledge
Essential criteria
  • ENB 998 or equivalent
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Knowledge of Critical Care Scoring Systems
  • Knowledge of the Critical Care Minimum Data Set (CCMDS) and its usage
  • Knowledge of the Data Protection Act
  • Understanding of the role of the Intensive Care National and Research Centre (ICNARC)
  • Good understanding of current government and NHS strategy and policy in regard to critical care
  • Experience of caring for critically ill patients and working within a multi-disciplinary team


Desirable criteria
  • Critical Care Course
  • ECDL or equivalent computer qualifications
  • Previous audit experience
  • Using qualitative techniques in data collection and analysis
