Job Summary

The return to practice nurse is a member of the healthcare team appointed to support registered nurses in the delivery of patient care and to assist them to meet their daily needs. The post holder will be supported to complete the Return to Practice level 3 programme at the University of West of England (UWE) with a view to continuing at the Trust in a Band 5 nursing role once NMC registration has been issued. The post holder will take personal responsibility for ensuring that Trust and Local Policies and Procedures are known and followed.

Knowledge, Training, Experience and Skills Required
  • Previous NMC registration
  • Competent or willing to undertake relevant specialist training in relation to the clinical area
  • Up to date mandatory training as set out by North Bristol NHS Trust.
  • Computer experience, Knowledge ofLorenzo ,ICE or equivalent systems and e-mail
  • Demonstration of caring and compassionate attributes
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to undertake appropriate training for required clinical activities, according to workplace area.
  • Previous experience in a hospital setting.
  • After appropriate training and competency assessment the post holder will be expected to prepare the patient and accurately perform ECG, undertake venepuncture, perform blood glucose monitoring and record clinical observations.
  • Ability to perform basic aseptic techniques and dressings
  • Able to monitor order and maintain stock levels.
  • Computer skills, ability to access the hospital computer to order bloods, locate and trace medical notes and retrieve personal information.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Good organisational and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to deal with emergency situations in relation to changes in patient condition and take prompt and appropriate action within the boundaries of local protocols
  • Be able to prioritise both your own individualwork loadand co-ordinate junior HCA’S under your direct supervision.
  • Participate in Ward Meetings.
  • Good interpersonal and time management skills.
  • Contribute to the provision of a safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with all members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing to those who contribute to patient care.
  • Ability to contribute and initiate positive changes to improve the outpatient environment and the service it offers.
  • Ability to act as assistant to medical staff during sterile procedures.
  • Perform area specific clinical competencies in line with core standards under the direction of a Registered Practitioner/Assistant Practitioner
  • Assist with patient assessment within level of competence reporting immediately any changes in the patients’ physical and mental condition to the Registered Practitioner/ Assistant Practitioner.
  • Communicate effectively, sensitively and compassionately with colleagues, patients and visitors.
  • Understand the importance of accurate and timely communication within the health care environment.
  • Prioritise and organise own workload under direction from the Registered Practitioner/ Assistant Practitioner.
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently following direction from Registered Practitioner/ Assistant Practitioner.
  • Ability to establish good relationships with work colleagues, patients and visitors. Able to work effectively within a team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Post
  • Deliver clinical and therapeutic care to patients as required within set protocols/policies and within the scope of the Health Care Support Worker remit.
  • Participate in patient assessment (with direct supervision and after appropriate delegation from the Registered Practitioner/Assistant Practitioner), to deliver high standards of care.
  • Perform area specific clinical competencies to enhance the delivery of patient care/therapy.
  • Under supervision follow individual care treatmentplans, andreport any changes immediatelyto the Registered Practitioner/Assistant Practitioner.
