This is a unique opportunity for nurses with a passion for neuroscience to work in the largest dedicated neuro critical care service in London. The area has a total of 28 ICU/HDU beds caring for patients with a broad range of Neuromedical and Neurosurgical conditions. Patients come via the stroke pathway and neurosurgical emergency pathway from across the London sector.

We provide a supportive environment with a structured programme of training and development for nurses new to the dual specialities. At all levels you will find a supportive nursing and multidisciplinary team. Your professional development is encouraged and facilitated by a dedicated Clinical Nurse Specialist and an Education Team for neurocritical care. Opportunities exist to undertake the critical care and neuro degree pathways, and a variety of courses can be accessed via City or Southbank Universities.

A minimum of 12 months acute experience in a hospital ward setting is essential, you will be keen to develop critical care skills and will participate in an individualised orientation including an introduction to ITU course

  • Registered Nurse


Desirable criteria
  • Relevant Teaching course
  • NVQ assessor


Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates awareness of the importance of working in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Prioritises own workload and that of other junior and support staff
  • Acts on own initiative and problem-solves utilising resources available
  • Works under own initiative within boundaries of role


Experience
Essential criteria
  • Post-registration experience in an acute hospital setting
  • Able to prioritise care for a group of patients and provide a plan of care
  • Demonstrates competence in giving medication and has completed Intravenous drug administration assessment

  • Can demonstrate experience of mentoring students and/or junior staff
  • Demonstrates evidence of ability to educate others


Communication
Essential criteria
  • Communicates effectively verbally, in writing and in electronic formats
  • Communicates with patients and carers in an empathetic manner

  • Flexible approach to shift patterns
  • Flexible approach to working across diverse area which includes HDU and ITU patients on 2 floors
  • Demonstrates an awareness of equality and diversity in practice
