Job overview

Its a great time to be join the Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) Service as we have been awarded Mental Health funding to expand the service. This enables us to increase the interventions provided and improve awareness of first episode of psychosis across the county leading to early referral and treatment to EIP

We provide comprehensive multi-disciplinary services and work closely with local specialist mental health teams, Children and Young Persons Mental Health Services, tertiary service providers, primary care, local statutory and non-statutory agencies, service users and carers and educational establishments.

The Early Intervention Services is a community service that provides assessments and NICE concordant interventions for people aged 14-65 years who present with suspected first episode of psychosis across Kent and Medway. This post is based in Canterbury covering the Canterbury and Coastal Area.

Main duties of the job

To manage a caseload of clients first episode psychosis with complex needs, using evidence based / client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.

To provide a professional contribution, supervision and advice to a multi-disciplinary team to support the delivery of safe, effective and high quality mental health services with meet existing new policies, practice and standards.

To act as care co-ordinator under the CPA process as appropriate
To provide leadership for students and / or junior staff, through supervision and appraisal.

To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of MDT services, holding responsibility for defined projects.

To regularly supervise students on practice placements

To carry out MDT activities e.g. generic assessments and duty responsibilities

To provide profession specific Assessments and Interventions for the wider team as required

Person specificationQualificationsEssential criteria
  • Registered RMN/OT/Social Worker

Desirable criteria
  • Appropriate practice assessor/educator qualification
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.


ExperienceEssential criteria
  • Substantial post registration experience
  • Experience and skills in clinical assessment
  • Experience working with service users with broad spectrum of complex mental health needs
  • Significant experience of working with service users with psychosis when acutely ill
  • Working in a multi-disciplinary setting
  • Experience of partnership working with statutory and voluntary services

Desirable criteria
  • Experience of Forensic cases
  • Experience of the use of evidence based interventions relating to the care of service users with first episode of psychosis.
  • Experience of working with service users experiencing psychosis within a community setting.
  • Experience of carrying out Family Interventions.
  • Experience of carrying out CBT.
  • Experience of working with Learning Disability service users.
  • Experience of working with Dual Diagnosis service users.


Knowledge and skillsEssential criteria
  • Current governement guidelines of provision of EIP services
  • Recovery Model and its application in practice
  • Working knowledge of Mental Health Act 1983, Care Act 2014
  • Knowledge of the Care Programme Approach
  • Knowledge of Risk Assessment
  • Knowledge of a range of interventions appropriate to the needs of service users with first episode of psychosis.
  • Good IT Skills
  • Ability to prioritise key tasks and target intervention
  • Crisis resolution and management skills
