Job Description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide a psychologically consistent family and social network Open Dialogue approach in which the majority of decision-making is carried out via whole system network meetings involving the service user, together with his or her family/network.

To be able to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service user, family/network and service .

To contribute to the core skills, attitude and values of POD practitioners within the team.

Work in a needs adapted way, providing flexible permutations of care to each network depending on what emerges from the meetings.

Attend weekly POD clinical supervision utilising the principles of POD.

To ensure that knowledge relating to role responsibilities are concordant with KMPT Policies, protocols and procedures. You will take the role of Care Co Ordinator.

To be responsible for providing accurate records of information required by KMPT within patient and other relevant records.

Ensure social care assessments are undertaken that met the social care eligibility standard as required under the Care Act 2014.

To ensure that all safeguarding (children and adults) cases follow the Kent and Medway multi agency protocol to ensure safe person centred care of vulnerable children and adults.

We would ask that successful candidates plan to stay with the service for 2 years post training or consider financially contributing towards the cost of the training if leaving before.

Person specificationQualificationsEssential criteria

  • •A recognised professional qualification in mental health nursing/occupational therapy/social work.
  • •Registration with relevant regulatory body. Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)/ The health and Care Professional (HCPC)
  • •Mentor or Practice Educator
  • •Open Dialogue or Peer Supported Open Dialogue training at foundation or certificate level (1 yr) or willing to train

Desirable criteria
  • •Registered member of the professional body e.g. Royal College of Nursing (RCN), British Association of Occupational Therapy (BAOT), British Association of Social Workers (BASW)
  • •Accredited Practice Educator


ExperienceEssential criteria
  • •Minimum of 2 years post registration experience.
  • •Experience of working in a mental health settings
  • •Experience of working with family/networks
  • •Experience of prioritising casework and allocation /delegation of tasks to others.
  • •Experience of liaising with a variety of stakeholders both internal and external to organisations.

Desirable criteria
  • •Experience of leading or contributing to service developments
  • •Experience of clinical audit and research
  • •Experience of family work and or carer involvement work


Knowledge and SkillsEssential criteria
  • •Knowledge and skill in providing core mental health or profession specific assessments to those experiencing a mental health crises.
  • •Systemic understanding of individuals within a family, community and cultural context
  • •Knowledge and expertise in the application of relevant professional theoretical models, and approaches relevant to client group.
  • •An understanding of the role of Peer Support workers within mental health services
  • •Knowledge of and ability to apply relevant legislative frameworks and policies relating to care e.g. Care programme approach, Mental Capacity Act 2005, Consent to Treatment, Care Act 2014 (including Safeguarding Adults). Children's Act 2014
  • •An understanding and ability to apply principles of risk assessment and risk management
  • •Understanding of the impact of mental health crisis on lifestyle and function for clients, family and carers.
  • •An understanding of biological, social and psychological (including Systemic) approached to understanding mental distress
  • •Understanding the principles of collaborative and co-productive working to enhance a model of choice and empowerment based on an asset and strengths model
  • •Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism at all times, especially in complex/challenging situations.
  • •Ability to analyse and resolve clinical and ethical issues.
  • •Ability to work autonomously and co-operatively as part of an inter- professional team.
  • •Ability to communicate complex, sensitive and emotional information using a variety of mediums; being able to adapt methods/style/approach as appropriate.
