Job Description

Main duties of the job

To assist the Ward Manager in providing leadership and operational management to the ward ensuring the provision of quality nursing care to all service users.

The post holder will assess, plan and implement care, and provide specialist nursing advice and carry out nursing procedures in the agreed care group.

They will provide clinical and managerial leadership to junior staff, providing supervision to junior staff and students.

To provide 24 hour senior nurse input to the whole unit and liaise with other agencies to support this duty.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To take on responsibilities of a ward nurse and deliver direct patient care.

To provide supervision and line management to junior staff and students.

To be an effective member of the MDT.

To work proactively to address any unit issues.

To manage the rota and ensure that suitable staffing levels are maintained.

To be involved in the development of the service and support planned changes to the service.

Person specification

Experience
Essential criteria
  • Post preceptor experience within an equivalent setting
  • Experience in inpatient mental health
  • Experience in implementing change
  • Experience in engaging in safewards initiatives


Desirable criteria
  • Experience managing junior staff
  • Experience as senior nurse providing support across more than one ward


Skills
Essential criteria
  • Mentor trained / supervision trained
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Managing safe staffing via rostering processes


Desirable criteria
  • Post qualification development / higher level training


Qualifications
Essential criteria
  • Registered mental health nurse with current NMC registration
