Describe A Situation Where You Had To Work Effectively As Part Of A Team During A Surgical Procedure
Situation: During my time as an ODP, I was assigned to a complex cardiac surgery case that required a highly coordinated team effort.
Task: My role was to assist the surgeon by setting up the operating theatre, preparing the necessary instruments, and ensuring patient safety throughout the procedure.
Action: I communicated effectively with the surgical team, actively participating in preoperative briefings, and addressing any concerns or questions. During the surgery, I anticipated the surgeon's needs, handed instruments promptly, and maintained a sterile environment.
Result: As a result of our cohesive teamwork, the surgery proceeded smoothly, and the patient had a successful outcome. The surgeon commended our team's efficiency and collaboration.
Describe A Situation Where You Had To Handle An Emergency During Surgery
Situation: While assisting in a routine appendectomy, the patient unexpectedly experienced cardiac arrest.
Task: My immediate task was to assist in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to revive the patient and stabilize their condition.
Action: Following the emergency protocol, I quickly coordinated with the anaesthesia team to administer emergency medications, provided ventilatory support, and initiated chest compressions. I communicated with the surgical team, updating them on the patient's status and ensuring a coordinated response.
Result: Due to our swift and effective response, we successfully resuscitated the patient, and they were transferred to the intensive care unit for further care. The consultant praised our team's ability to remain calm and organized in a high-pressure situation.
