About Practice Nurse Jobs

Before you can apply for practice nursing jobs it is essential that you firstly study to become an RGN – Registered General Nurse. It is a requirement to obtain a pre registration degree in nursing. Once you have obtained this degree you’ll be able to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and then, of course, the right to apply for practice nursing jobs. The first year of the pre registration degree is the CFP year, which is the Common Foundation Programme shared by all RGN Nurse students, regardless of which specialism they choose to take up in the following two years.

In order to become a Practice Nurse it is recommended that you have at least two years professional experience post study before entering in to this field within a primary health team. Practice Nurses work in GP (General Practitioners) Surgeries and are part of the Primary Healthcare Team, which may also include doctors, pharmacists, dietitians and other nurses. Larger GP practices may mean that there are several Practice Nurses in attendance or if it is a small practice the Practice Nurse may find themselves working alone but taking on many varied tasks and roles.

Practice Nurses invariably find themselves at the core concerned with every aspect of patient treatment and care, looking after and caring for every segment of the community from young children right through to the elderly. Responsibilities for a Practice Nurse will include some of the following: health screening, family planning, vaccination programmes, minor operations under local anaesthetic, the treatment of small injuries and investigative procedures.

Other roles will include running clinics for illnesses such as diabetes and asthma as well as offering specialist information and advice on other problems such as obesity, smoking and heart conditions. Qualities expected of a good Practice Nurse would include flexibility, adaptability and ability to work on their own initiative with confidence and good organisational skills.

Whilst Practice Nurses are expected to work well on their own off their own initiative it is imperative that they are also able to work well alongside other members of the primary health care team.
