Oncology nurse jobs were created when major advances were made in the treatment of cancer. Nursing experienced a change that resulted in an expansion in nursing roles that acknowledged the importance of oncology nurse jobs. This was mainly due to various developments in understanding the issues around the specialist care needed for cancer patients. It became widely recognised that there was a need for a specialised focus on individuals and families coping with the effects of cancer.

The job of an oncology nurse is varied and can cover a multitude of different areas from being a coordinator of care, a direct care giver, an educator, consultant, administrator and researcher.

Oncology nursing care ranges right from prevention, pain relief and acute care to rehabilitative and palliative support care. When looking for an oncology nurse job there are also many specialist areas one can go in to such as chemotherapy, specialist breast oncology, radiation therapy, bone marrow transplant through to prevention and early detection. In order to specialise in oncology nursing it is a requirement to undergo specialist training and gain valuable specific cancer treatment experience on top of the RGN qualification. Oncology nurses can find themselves working in a variety of settings, which may include hospitals, specialist cancer treatment centres and also in the patient’s own home.
