    Job Description

    Volunteer role: Sexual Reproductive Health Nurse, Uganda with Voluntary Services Overseas Ireland (VSO)

    Location: Moroto, Uganda

    Duration of role: 12 months

    VSO is the world’s leading independent international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries. Their high-impact approach brings people together to share skills, build capabilities, promote international understanding and action to change lives and make the world a fairer place.

    The purpose of this volunteer role is to build and strengthen the capacity of health workers, clinical leads and Village Health Team members in Adolescent friendly maternal, sexual and reproductive health services, essential new-born care and emergency maternal obstetrics care through trainings, on the job coaching, mentoring and support supervision. Support strengthening of referral pathways and functioning of maternity and labour wards at Nadunget Health Centre (HCIII) and other level III health care facilities in Moroto region.  Provide technical advice and support implementation of policies and procedures.

     

    Responsibilities:

    • Strengthen the skills of health workers in Nadunget HCIII and surrounding HCs in the delivery of appropriate and effective Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) services through providing on-the-job training
    • Coach and supervise midwives on basic emergency obstetrics and new-born care services (BeMONC) and in this appoint champions who will roll out mentorship and supervision after the programme ends
    • Support health workers in data collection, reporting and analysing
    • Advise the Health Centres (HCs) and Community Bases Organizations (CBOs) on the roll-out of integrated SRH and Family Planning counselling to adolescents and attend outreach sessions where appropriate
    • Support in the implementation of the new National SRH guidelines
    • Implement community support systems, such as antenatal or emergency plans
    • Conduct Trainings of Trainers for hospital and health facility staff in BEMOC and antepartum care, aligned to outcomes needs assessment
    • Support the monitoring and evaluation pertaining to maternal new-born and AYSRH services including maternal review and maternal mortality audit meetings.
    • Participate in VSO health project planning and review meetings.
    • Prepare and submit monthly plans and reports to VSO and partner, including documenting best practices, lessons learnt, and cases studies.

    Due to the nature of our volunteer placements, it is possible that the responsibilities of this role may differ in reality and therefore the post holder will need to be prepared to be flexible and adapt to their environment as necessary.

    Skills, qualifications and experience

    The individual should be:

    • Qualified nursing professional specialized in SRH, with at least 3 years’ experience.
    • Experience in and Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) preferred.
    • Fully accredited by the relevant professional body.

     

    Allowance and accommodation
    All volunteers have an allowance paid in local currency. The allowance meets reasonable living expenses in country. The cost of accommodation is fully covered for the duration of the stay.
