    Job Description

    An opportunity has arisen for a passionate Mental Health Nurse to join our Inpatients team at HMYOI Feltham. HMYOI Feltham is a Young Offenders Institute for young people aged 15-18 and young adults aged 18-21. HMYOI is accessible via Bus and Train links and also provides onsite parking for staff

    About the Job:

    You will work as part of the nursing team, utilising your clinical expertise, decision making and problem solving skills to provide skilled and evidence based nursing care for patients in a prison setting. Working within your scope of practice, in accordance with Care UK and prison service policies and procedures and in line with the NMC Code of professional conduct: standards for conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and midwives

    Key Responsibilities

    • Participate in a 24hr 7 day a week rota. • Assess all patient emergencies and ensure continuity of care through appropriate communication. • Act as an autonomous practitioner, assessing patient’s physical, social and psychological needs to develop a holistic health care plan, working in collaboration with other healthcare professionals and as part of the prison’s multi-disciplinary team. • Ensure adherence to Department of Health Prison health key performance and quality indicators/Her Majesty’s Inspector of Prisons expectations. • Ensure that clinics for long term conditions are delivered in a clinically effective and timely way, in line with the establishments health needs. • Initiate and contribute to strategies designed to promote and improve health and prevent disease, working proactively and collaborating with other agencies. • Maintain record keeping competencies and patient confidentiality, in accordance with Care UK and Prison Service policies and the Nursing and Midwifery Code of Conduct. • Demonstrate awareness of wider issues affecting the offender population, e.g. mental illness, alcohol and drug dependencies, together with strategies and support mechanisms to address these. • Identify issues pertinent to the patient groups served and advocate on their behalf to promote health and well-being. • In the absence of a Clinical Lead, be responsible for planning cover, appropriate staffing and skill mix, ensuring adequate cover at all times. • Ensure equipment is obtained, used and maintained in accordance with Care UK requirements. • Achieve excellent and effective relationships with all care provid3ers and patients. He/she should act as a positive ambassador for Care UK. • The post holder must also be able to maintain good relationships with colleagues and work effectively as part of a team. • Demonstrate diplomacy and be able to deal with staff and patients in such a way as to avoid conflict. • Demonstrate effective leadership skills which expand and develop good practice. • Be aware of the limitations of own competencies and undertake further education and development to enhance these. • Ensure participation of self and team in clinical supervision ensuring that practice is maintained at a high level and is evaluated utilising a variety of mechanisms • Co-ordinate shift, carrying a UHF radio to aid communication and to ensure appropriate level of response to emergency situations. • Undertake performance development reviews in line with Care UK policies to facilitate effective learning experiences and achieve objectives. • Facilitate effective learning experiences for junior members of staff through mentorship and clinical supervision. • Support the prison suicide awareness policy / safer custody team and ensure attendance of healthcare staff at reviews. • To treat all patients as individuals, respecting their privacy and dignity at all times. • Facilitate change in practice that will improve clinical outcomes and meet the needs of patients consistent with national standards and current research/evidence. • Demonstrate awareness and application of clinical governance with particular attention to clinically effective practice, clinical audit and risk management. • Participate in the recognising ethical and legal issues which have implications for nursing practice and take the appropriate action. • To be aware and act upon, when necessary procedures that are in place to protect vulnerable individuals. • Responsible for self and team to be competent in the use of electronic medical records management systems. • General administrative skills-effectively carry out administrative tasks associated with the administrative systems.
