Our General Surgery service is a 14 bedded Unit that provides care for acutely ill patients, including ITU patients that have under gone surgery. The service specialises in Gynae, Gastro, urology, colorectal, ENT and some plastics, amongst others and also caters for some medical patients. There are 12 people in the team that work together to provide the highest level of care possible in a very busy, yet modern environment

Job Description

Working closely with consultants and the MDT, as a Staff Nurse in our General Surgery Unit you will assess, plan, deliver and implement a high standard of nursing care, responding to individual needs of the patients. Providing general patient care and administration of medicines you will also, supervising and directing junior staff and deputising for Senior Staff in their absence, including being in charge of the ward on occasion.

Salary £31,086 - £35,206 + 9% enhancement

Hours 37.5hrs per week (12hr shifts and weekend rotation)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prioritising workloads and promote team working
  • Assess, plan and deliver care, based on individual patient and family needs
  • To deputise for senior staff in their absence, demonstrating leadership and management
  • Ensure all patient charges are captured
  • Check and report faulty equipment
  • Undertake extended roles such as IV cannulation, phlebotomy
  • Evaluate care of the team and ensure standards are met
  • Support and act as role model for junior staff, promoting a learning environment
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients and staff and to maintain accurate records of patient care
  • Provide patients and families with information regarding the care and management of their condition

Skills & Experience

  • NMC registered Nurse Level 1
  • Experience in acute surgical setting or has a background of HDU
  • Knowledge of thoracic drainage or tracheotomy would be desirable
  • Excellent communication skills
