Senior Staff Nurse (Paediatric Inpatients)


Permanent/Full Time

Salary up to £39,500 per annum plus Benefits

The successful candidate will be responsible and accountable without direct supervision for the assessment of required care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of care for children on our clients General Surgical and Medical ward including Urology, ENT Renal and Plastics.

You will be undertaking delegated responsibility for the department in the absence of the Sister/Charge Nurse and working to promote a progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through research and evidence based practice.

Duties & Responsibilities

• To act as a clinical role model and leader for all members of staff

• To ensure that each child is assessed and that their care is planned, implemented and evaluated in negotiation with the patient’s family, and that this is accurately documented

• Provide care with an advanced clinical understanding of the therapies and drugs used within paediatrics and be competent in their administration

• Understands the correct use and assembly of required equipment understand safety precautions and ensure appropriate cleaning of equipment

• To be competent in the administration of medication, including intravenous routes

• Maintaining and monitoring levels of stock to ensure there are adequate levels of supplies

• To ensure clinical practice is evidence based or peer reviewed

• Ensure that treatments prescribed by the medical staff are carried out, and that interdisciplinary team members are informed of changes in the patient’s condition

• Communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers and other staff, overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events

• Develop open and trusting relationships with other members of the multidisciplinary team, other departments and community services as necessary

• To act as a clinical role model and leader for all members of staff

• Ensure the provision of appropriate supervision and support to members of the team

• To take charge of the clinical area, utilising appropriate support as necessary

• Manage allocated resources effectively and efficiently. This includes maintaining the correct skill mix of staff for patient dependency, bed management, utilisation of time and equipment, in the absence of senior staff

Skills & Experience

• Extensive knowledge and experience as a Children’s Nurse

• NMC Registered with a valid RN1/RNA and/or RN8/RNC (or equivalent)

• Basic/Intermediate Paediatric Life Support

• Understanding of Safeguarding issues

• Teaching and mentoring experience

• Excellent written and verbal communication

• Competent with computers and able to use clinical systems

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Excellent clinical governance and experience with audits

• Ability to work within a team and independently
