District nurse jobs provide care for people who suffer with long term illnesses or incapacities. A district nurse (or district nursing) visits and cares for incapacitated people that are in private, residential, or healthcare settings. Such patients include those that are terminally ill, the elderly, disabled, or those who’ve just left the hospital.
To qualify for district nurse jobs, applicants must be a registered nurse. District nurses must be flexible to work in a variety of places, some of which do not have hospitals close by. The district nurse must also be a confident, patient and organized person that can deal with situations that are challenging.
Hospitals rely on the important work of the district nurse who assists to keep hospital admissions and re-admissions at bay, while working to ensure a quick return of patients to their homes.
The district nurse’s duties are to provide emotional support and consultation to individuals and their families through education of a healthy lifestyle and basic care skills as needed. Complex patient assessment and organization of member nursing teams are also part of the district nurse’s role.
Day by day duties of the district nurse involve—
- Making sure patients respond positively to treatments
- Establishing bonds with patients, their families and caregivers
- Confirming that patients and their families know and understand the treatment
- Educating in the administering of medication
- Giving emotional support to patients and their families
- Checking all vital signs of patients
- Administering treatment to include injections, bandaging and taking blood/urine specimens
- Assessment, management and planned care of patients
- Identifying various social care problems and making referrals to the proper organization when necessary
